Don’t Let YouTube Shorts Trip You Up

When my daughter was five, I tried everything to teach her how to tie her shoes. Bunny ears, songs, those little cardboard practice shoes with holes punched in them—nothing worked. Total flop. Then one day, I sat her down in front of a YouTube video. Thirty minutes later? She was laced up and out the door.

That’s the world we live in.

People don’t just watch YouTube for fun. They solve problems there. They figure things out. How to braid their kid’s hair, how to grill salmon, how to fund a 529 plan. So if you’re not showing up on YouTube—especially in Shorts format—you’re leaving visibility, credibility, and future client conversations on the table.

This guide walks you through the art (and science) of uploading a YouTube Short so that it gets seen, supports compliance, and drives action. Think of it as your field guide to video traction.

1. Shoot it Vertical

YouTube Shorts are their own species. Ignore the format rules, and your video might not even make it into the Shorts feed. It’s gotta be vertical (that’s 9:16), ideally under 45 seconds, and at least 1080×1920 resolution. Think: content made for people holding their phones upright in the checkout line at Trader Joe’s.

If your video is over a minute long, horizontal, and loaded with slow intros, it’s not a Short. It’s a skipped video.

2. Titles That Hook

Nobody wants to click on “Episode 47 – Financial Planning Insights.” Your viewer doesn’t care that it’s your 47th anything. They care about what’s in it for them.

Try this instead:

    • “3 Mistakes Keeping You From Retiring at 60”
    • “This LinkedIn Tip Landed Me a $1M Client”
    • “What Most People Get Wrong at 59½”

You’re not writing a label. You’re writing a headline. And while I hate to admit it, fear-based or curiosity-driven titles do tend to win. So, lean into that tension—ethically, of course.

Just keep the hashtags out of the title (save those for the description).

3.  Descriptions That Actually Pull Their Weight

Too many advisors leave this blank or copy/paste SEO gibberish. Don’t.

Start strong. Your first sentence is prime real estate—YouTube uses it to decide who sees your video. Be conversational but keyword smart.

Then give the viewer something to do:

    • Watch the full episode
    • Visit your site
    • Download your free guide
    • Subscribe

Add #Shorts near the end of the description along with 3–5 relevant hashtags like #financialadvisor #retirementplanning or #moneymindset. No need to go overboard.

4. Captions, Thumbnails & Playlists—Yes, They Matter

Auto captions? Better than nothing, but still a gamble. Burned-in captions—those big, bold, 2–4 word phrases that pop up on screen—are your best friend. Most viewers watch with the sound off. You either meet them there or lose them.

As for thumbnails, here’s the truth bomb: You can’t upload a custom one for Shorts yet. YouTube randomly selects a frame. But you can influence the outcome. If the first 1–2 seconds of your video feature a clean, strong frame—like a smiling face or clear text—that’s more likely to get pulled. If that fails log in to the mobile app and YouTube will let you choose the frame you want as your thumbnail.

And yes, playlists still matter—even for Shorts. Group your videos into themes like “Quick College Savings Tips” or “Retirement Strategies for Business Owners.” This keeps people bingeing and builds credibility faster than a drip campaign.

5.Back-End Moves That Save You Time (and Headaches)

Now for the stuff no one wants to deal with… but everyone needs.

Make Your Channel Look Like You Exist

Brand consistency builds trust. Your YouTube channel should feel like a natural extension of your website.

    • Profile pic: Use a headshot if you’re solo. Logo if you’re a firm.
    • Channel banner: Don’t waste the space. Communicate who you help, how, and include clickable links.
    • Match fonts, colors, and tone across platforms. It matters.

Thumbnails (for Long-Form)

Even though Shorts thumbnails are auto-generated, your long-form content still needs custom thumbnails. And no, Canva is not cheating—it’s strategy.

Here’s your thumbnail cheat sheet:

    • Clear, expressive face
    • Short text hook (under 5 words)
    • Arrows or visual focus cues
    • Brand colors and gasp! Skip the logo!!!

Create a template and reuse it to build visual consistency.

Titles, Descriptions & Keywords

For long-form and Shorts alike:

    • Write titles in plain English. Think: “How to avoid taxes on RMDs” not “Episode 9: RMD Planning Insights.”
    • Descriptions should front-load the value and end with links.
    • Don’t forget your channel-level keywords. These help YouTube match your content to actual search queries like “Roth vs Traditional IRA” or “How much do I need to retire?”
    •

Upload Defaults = Sanity Saver

Set your upload defaults (descriptions, visibility settings, tags, etc.) in advance. That way every video starts with your boilerplate already baked in. Here’s a video tutorial on how to do it

And most importantly you need to manually disable comments on every short you upload for compliance. Even if your channel is globally set to no comments, so irritating I know!

You need to manually toggle them off every time. But good news! You can do it in bulk.

Here’s our guide to do it fast and easy so compliance will love you!

6. After You Hit Publish

Don’t just walk away. Get more traction:

    • Add a comment: Ask a question, drop a link, or point to a related video.
    • Promote strategically: Don’t just repost the link. Tailor your caption for LinkedIn, Instagram, or wherever your people are hanging out and direct upload it there.
    • Use it on your website and in email. Even if it’s vertical you can still embed it in your website and add a still to your email to get the most eyes on your expertise.
    • You don’t need to go viral. You just need to be useful, consistent, and findable.

And remember: If a five-year-old can learn to tie her shoes from a YouTube video, your future clients can learn why you are the advisor they’ve been looking for—if you show up the right way.
